LET CHECK RECORD FACT OF IGODO

TO EXPLAIN THE MEANING OF IGODO miẹn GODO (IGODOMIGODO), WE MUST first OF ALL UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF ‘ODO’, IG’ODO, IZAG’ODO and OTÖ ĖGH’ODO.

The reason why mortar for pounding yam is called ‘Odo’ is because of the deep round space or opening carved in the middle of the wood used in making mortar, Same applies to Otọ ẹgh’odo which is a circular or square space or opening created in the middle of ancient Benin building architecture in order to allow air, sunlight directly into the building and also to collect rain water indoors for cooking.

Gallon is referred to as Izag’odo because of the space it contains for storing Liquid such as water, oil etc. There are other examples such as Uk’odo (big wide pot for cooking).

‘Odo’ in these cases means big undulating ‘space or an opening in the middle’ while ‘Igọ’ means corner or a bend, ‘miẹn’ means saw or met and godo means undulating. Ig’Odo means ‘edge or corner of an undulating space or an opening in the middle of an expanse of land’, the name of the first Ogiso is Igodo while Igodomigodo (Igodo miẹn godo) simply means ‘Igodo saw the bend or corner of a large undulating space in the middle of an expanse of land’ known today as Africa.
