THE MAJOR CAUSES OF IGBO DENIAL

Our Disunity as Igbos have emboldened other groups to annex the already fragmented Igbo tribes, they leap on what they can, knowing we won’t speak out in one voice.

THE NDOKI EXPERIENCE IS REPEATING ITSELF EVERYWHERE IN IGBO LAND

The Ndoki Indigenous Igbos carved into Rivers State at a time felt betrayed by other Igbos seeing how silent they watched on as Ogoni tried to take their ancestral land without lending their voice against it. Like every other Indigenous Igbos, they were left to fight for their land alone in 1983 and they were victorious in the end. But until date, some of our brothers in Rivers State from other Igbo areas still reference Obigbo as Ogoni land and completely dismiss that we are indigenous despite that we are one of the oldest people to settle in that area and the ancestral home of all Ndoki people started from Obunkwu-Okwankwu – Umuagbai axis all in Obigbo, Rivers State. Perharps that’s why some of our people decided to embrace Ijaw this days, this is because Igbos don’t fight for other igbos but Ijaws in Ondo can even come to support an ijaw here in Rivers regardless of distance.

Infact one of those promoting this Ijaw thing in Ndoki told me that they are trying to align with Ijaws because they feel they will get more support from the Ijaws.

Like the Egbema people in Onelga, It is the same story Ndoki people have in Abia too. Every Igbo tribe fights for their survival.

I understand that we have just one LGA in ABia and only one in Rivers and its a problem for us cause it sets us as a minority area. However, it has not broken the bond of Unity amongst us as Ndoki which is what is holding us together, that is why we say “Ndoki wu Ihe Oli” and the artificial boundary does not define us.

When Afam people were having issues with PHCN over Afam power in 2019. The whole Ndoki in Abia and Rivers came together and closed down the power station because a brother was in need, we did not get that show of solidarity from other rivers Igbos. If we can unite and seek our collective interest, I am sure it will bring more development and progress to Ali Igbo in Rivers state both in Ikwerre, Ekpeye, Etche, Ogba, Egbema, Ndoni, Opobo, Bonny and Egbema etc.

This NDOKI experience is peculiar to Igbos everywhere in Nigeria, every Igbo community is left to fight their battles regardless of proximity with another Igbo community. Sometimes an occurrence in times past will be the yardstick to abandon an Igbo community in distress by others. We lack oneness, we’re so unforgiving and can easily remind the next tribe of what happened between them in the past. Our divisiveness is the number one cause of Igbo denial in Nigeria. Some of us think that IGBO denial is a Southern Igbo thing, that’s a lie because many communities in Anambra and Enugu is presently faced with this Igbo denial disease.
