It is an ideographic script whose symbols refer to abstract concepts, actions or things and whose use facilitates communication among peoples speaking different languages.

Nsibidi does not correspond to any one spoken language.

It is the oldest form of writing in Africa, with the exception of hieroglyphics.

While the origin of the symbol is generally unknown, one theory states that the symbol was associated with leopard societies in Calabar.
