Before being annexed by the Germans in 1884, Bimbia was an independent state of the Isubu
Bimbia is now a growing ecotourism destination. Visitors can see the slave trade remnants, as well as other historic sites like the first Baptist church in Cameroon, the Alfred Saker monument, and Nichols’ Island.
Bimbia was a major slave trade port in the 18th century, with historians estimating that at least 10% of enslaved Africans passed through the port.
The ruins of the port are still intact, and include chains, bells, bracelets, and prison pillars.
Bimbia was the first-place white men, the Jamaican and English Baptist missionaries led by Rev. Alfred Saker set foot on the Cameroon shores in 1858, from Fernando Po.
There, he built the first school and first Church. Later, he went to Victoria where he built the Ebenezer Baptist Church.
The Bimbia man was the first person to go to Saker’s school and the first to become Christian.
