Located on the west bank of the Cross River, Afikpo Village-Group is situated in the East Central State of Ebonyi. With an estimated population of 35,000 in 1960, Afikpo is one of approximately 200 autonomous Igbo village-groups.

Cultural Diversity and Unity

The Igbo people, including Afikpo, have never been unified under a single state. Instead, each village-group maintains its distinct features, such as kinship structures, political systems, and artistic expressions. Afikpo’s culture blends Igbo traditions with influences from neighboring groups to the south and east.

Afikpo belongs to the Ada (Edda) subgroup, which includes:

1. Okpoha
2. Edda
3. Amaseri
4. Unwana
5. Nkporo
6. Akaeze
