Did you know people have been experimenting with ways to collect water from the air for over a century?
This journey began in the early 1900s with Russian engineer Friedrich Zibold, who discovered ancient stone structures in Crimea. Zibold believed these “dew condensers” had been built by the ancient Greeks to provide water to the city of Theodosia. Inspired, he constructed his own dew-harvesting device using sea stones on Mount Tepe Oba, producing up to 360 liters of water per day, though not enough to meet the needs of an entire community.

Decades later, Belgian inventor Achille Knapen continued the quest by building an “air well” in southeastern France in the 1930s. His design allowed warm, humid air to enter during the day and condense on a central column at night, but the yield was disappointing. Despite their limited success, these early pioneers sparked new innovations.

Today, dew-harvesting techniques are used in Chile, Peru, and India, where specially designed dew condensers provide essential drinking water for dry regions. These early experiments remind us that groundbreaking ideas can evolve into practical, life-changing solutions, proof that even our most ambitious ideas today could transform the world tomorrow.
