Late Chief (Dr.) Mathias Nwafor Ugochukwu (1926–1990)
He was the Abalikete 1 of Umunze, the Igwe of Orumba, and the Eze Ohazurume 1 of Igboland.
A well-known philanthropist and a prominent Nigerian businessman, he was also popularly referred to as “the white eagle that dazzled.” He played a pioneering role in large-scale manufacturing in the Eastern region.
As a businessman, he founded numerous firms, forming a strong conglomerate. He served as the chairman of various industries, including John Holt (Nigeria) Ltd., Bisco Biscuit Manufacturing Company of Nigeria Ltd., Ugochukwu & Sons Ltd., Ugochukwu Chemical Industries Ltd. (Ugofoam), Ugochukwu Household Furnishings Ltd., Ugochukwu Palm Kernel Oil Ltd., West African Provincial Insurance Company Ltd., Ugochukwu Tyres Ltd., and Engineering and Mercantile Enterprises Ltd.
