Meet Adegoke Olubummo: A Trailblazer in Nigerian Mathematics
Adegoke Olubummo holds a distinguished place in Nigerian history as the nation’s first professor of mathematics. His contributions to academia and mentorship have left a lasting legacy.
Early Life and Education
Olubummo’s educational journey began at Ifaki Methodist School, where he completed his studies in 1937. He then attended Wesley College, Ibadan, in 1938. Olubummo earned a B.A. degree from Fourah Bay College in Sierra Leone, a prestigious institution known for producing many of West Africa’s leading intellectuals ¹. He further advanced his studies at King’s College, University of Durham, in England, earning an M.A. in Mathematics in 1952 and a Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1955.
Academic Career
Olubummo began his teaching career in 1955 as a lecturer in the Mathematics Department at the University College, Ibadan. In 1964, he became a full professor, marking a significant milestone as the first Nigerian to achieve this status in mathematics ¹. He served as the Head of the Department of Mathematics for many years, shaping the department’s academic direction and fostering the growth of mathematics in Nigeria.
After retiring from the University of Ibadan in 1985, Olubummo continued his academic service as the Dean of the Faculty of Science at Ondo State University, contributing to the development of science education in Nigeria.
Personal Life
Olubummo’s passion for mathematics extended to his family. He raised three children who also pursued careers in mathematics, including Yewande Olubummo, a notable mathematician in her own right.
