These guidelines, often referred to as social rules, are seen in homes, Churches, schools, workplaces, and other communal spaces. While some may perceive these rules as attempts to enforce conformity, they are better understood as principles for fostering respect, understanding, and harmony in a diverse society.

The Bible underscores the importance of civility and mutual respect, as seen in Romans 12:18, which advises, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” Social rules, like returning borrowed items or refraining from making personal comments about someone’s appearance, reflect this principle by emphasizing kindness and consideration. These actions demonstrate love for one’s neighbour, a command central to Christian teachings (Mark 12:31).

The tendency to expect others to think or act like us often arises from a limited understanding of different perspectives. Furthermore, the call to treat everyone equally, regardless of status, resonates with James 2:1, which warns against showing favouritism. Whether interacting with a cleaner or a CEO, respect for others mirrors Christ’s teaching of love and equality.
