Yellowman, whose real name is Winston Foster, was born on January 15, 1956, in Jamaica. When he was born, his parents left him because of his albinism. People believed that being albino was bad luck. Yellowman grew up in an orphanage and never knew his parents.
As a child, people made fun of him because of his skin. They called him “Yellowman” to mock him. But Yellowman didn’t let their words bring him down. He turned to music, and it became his hope.
When Yellowman started becoming famous, he decided to use the name “Yellowman” to show that he was proud of who he was. He became the first Jamaican artist to sign with a big music label and the first Dancehall artist to be nominated for a Grammy award.
But Yellowman’s success was put to the test when he was diagnosed with cancer in 1986. Doctors said he only had six months to live. But Yellowman fought the cancer and won. He had surgery, which changed his face, but he didn’t let that stop him.
Yellowman kept making music and released many successful albums. He got married and had children. His daughter recently got married.
Today, Yellowman is 69 years old and still known as the King of Dancehall. His story teaches us about perseverance and being proud of who we are.
