Nigeria 1976: The Origin of “Carton of Beer”

Ever wondered why we still say “carton of beer” today? Let’s dive into the history of Star Lager, one of Nigeria’s iconic beverages.

Star Lager: A Brief History
The very first bottle of Star Lager beer was produced in the early hours of July 9, 1949, at the Nigerian Breweries Limited (NBL) plant located in Iganmu, Lagos. This historic brewery was constructed by Taylor Woodrow, a British construction company.

Interestingly, the same firm, Taylor Woodrow, was also responsible for building the Guinness Brewery in Ikeja.

Why “Carton of Beer”?
In those early days, beer was distributed in cartons for ease of transport and storage. The phrase “carton of beer” became widely used and has remained part of our lexicon, even as packaging evolved over the years.

Fun Fact
Beer has been a staple beverage in Nigeria for decades, and the production never seems to run dry! 🍻
