30 Years Ago, 4 Teenagers Hijacked a Plane in Nigeria

On October 25, 1993, four brave teenagers hijacked a Nigerian Airways plane. The plane was flying from Lagos to Abuja, but the teenagers diverted it to Niamey, Niger Republic.

This happened because the government had unfairly cancelled the presidential election that took place on June 12, 1993. The teenagers were protesting this decision.

The four teenagers were Richard Ogunderu, Kabir Adenuga, Benneth Oluwadaisi, and Kenn. They were very young, just 19 years old.

Richard’s father was shocked when he found out what his son had done. He said, “I woke up one morning and my son was gone. He left a note saying he was going to Jos. Then I heard on the news that he had hijacked a plane.”

The teenagers wanted the government to recognize Moshood Abiola as the winner of the presidential election. They also wanted freedom of the press and for the government to be held accountable for its actions.

The hijacking was a big deal, and it made news all around the world.
