Facts About the Late First President of Namibia, Sam Nujoma (1929–2025)
- His highest level of education was Standard 6.
- Soon after his wedding, at age 30, he left Namibia, his wife, and children to go into exile and start an armed liberation movement for Namibia’s independence. He would not return to Namibia for 30 years.
- He served as president for three terms (1990–2005). During his presidency, he never borrowed money from the World Bank or the IMF.
- As president, he never appointed relatives to government positions. After leaving office, he did not interfere in Namibian politics and refused to endorse political candidates.
- He was not materialistic. He owned only two properties in Windhoek, one donated by the government and the other by a business couple as well as a government-donated farm.
- He never sought medical treatment abroad and received all his healthcare in Namibia.
