🎂On October 2, 1929 the late actor Moses Gunn was born in St. Louis, Missouri. An Obie Award-winning stage player, he is an alumnus of the Negro Ensemble Company. His 1962 off-Broadway debut was in Jean Genet’s The Blacks, and his Broadway debut was in A Hand is on the Gate, an evening of African-American poetry. He was nominated for the 1976 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his performance in The Poison Tree, and he also played Othello on Broadway in 1970. For his screen performances, Gunn is best known for his roles as Clotho in WUSA (1970), Bumpy Jonas in Shaft (1971) and Shaft’s Big Score (1972), and Joe on Little House on the Prairie (1977-1981). His notable work in horror and science fiction films include Rollerball (1975), The Ninth Configuration (1980), Amityville II: The Possession (1982), Firestarter (1984), and Bates Motel (1987). He also appeared on an episode of Tales from the Crypt (1990). His other notable work in film include Nothing But a Man (1964), What’s So Bad About Feeling Good? (1968), Carter’s Army (1970), The Great White Hope (1971), Wild Rovers (1971), Eagle in a Cage (1972), The Hot Rock (1972), Haunts of the Very Rich (1972), The Iceman Cometh (1973), Amazing Grace (1974), Cornbread, Earl and Me (1975), Aaron Loves Angela (1975), Remember My Name (1978), Ragtime (1981), The NeverEnding Story (1984), Certain Fury (1985), Heartbreak Ridge (1986), Leonard Part 6 (1987), Dixie Lanes (1988), Murder Times Seven (1990), Perfect Harmony (1991) and Brother Future (1991). His other notable work on television include Hawaii Five-O (1971), Kung Fu (1973), The Cowboys (1974), The Jeffersons (1975), Movin’ On (1975), Good Times (1977), Roots (1977), Quincy M.E. Gunn was set to play the part of Judge Richard Farris on the TV mini-series The Stand (1994) , but passed away before filming started. The role went to Ossie Davis.
