SYLVANUS OLYMPIO was the first African to intellectually and diplomatically challenge French imperialism on the world stage. As early as 1947, he stood before the United Nations to denounce France’s colonial control over TOGO, defying not just a global system of barbaric white supremacy, but also a postwar order determined to repackage empire as “trusteeship.”

In the 1950s, he rejected France’s sham elections, exposed their interference, and was arrested and banned from office by colonial authorities desperate to silence him. Olympio envisioned a sovereign TOGO, one not chained to French economic or military interests. He insisted Togolese firms have first claim to national resources and refused to allow his country to become another pawn in France’s Françafrique, a network of compliant ex-colonies hosting military bases and enabling French economic plundering.

Olympio’s boldest act of resistance led to the end of his life. He planned to pull TOGO out of the CFA Franc; a colonial currency controlled by the French treasury that still shackles 14 African nations to Paris. Just two days before the withdrawal was to be finalized, OLYMPIO was assassinated in a French-backed military coup led by ex-French Legionnaires, including the future dictator GNASSINGBE EYADÉMA (The father of the current President).

His murder wasn’t just a regime change, it was an act of financial and political terror to ensure that no AFRICAN state would successfully break free and inspire others to follow. France feared the domino effect of real independence. The West calls it “stability”; we know it as neocolonialism enforced by bullets and banks.

His assassination was not by random chance, but by soldiers trained by France and the U.S, armed and unleashed to do imperialism’s dirty work. He was gunned down outside the U.S embassy in Lomé on January 13, 1963.

His murder was not just the silencing of a man, but the assassination of an anti-imperialist dream proof that the West will use every means, from rigged elections to economic sabotage and political murder, to crush African liberation. His legacy lives on in every effort to break the CFA franc and dismantle foreign dominance of African futures…
