It was around this time in 2013 when NAACP Iowa/Nebraska Youth & College Division members challenged the school board when the idea of making Dr. Martin Luther King’s day of observance a snow day!

Young Black teenagers faced ridicule and harsh words from local community members who seen no reason for a fight.

They also were championed on by Black parents and supporters from all over. They won what some seen as a small victory but for them it was bigger. It went to show that we can lift our voices and be heard!

Every day we honor that fight and the fights of those who came before us. Thank you Dr. King for having a hand in creating those sparks!
