When Parents Fight Teachers: Who Truly Loses?
When Parents Fight Teachers: Who Truly Loses?
“A wise child brings joy to a father; a foolish child brings grief to a mother” (Proverbs 10:1).
There is an alarming rise in cases where parents storm schools to insult, humiliate, or even physically confront teachers simply for disciplining their children. In some instances, teachers have been arrested, traumatized, and silenced, all for doing the very job society entrusted them with.
But let us ask: if parents are unwilling to allow trained educators to correct or guide their children, should they then homeschool them instead?
The role of a teacher is sacred. Historically, the Nigerian education system has been built on the back of selfless educators, underpaid, overworked, and undervalued, yet unwavering in their duty. From pre-independence missionary schools to modern classrooms, discipline has always been a core pillar. Without it, learning collapses.
In Hebrews 12:11, the Bible reminds us: “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” A child without discipline today becomes a danger to society tomorrow.
Yes, teachers must avoid abuse, but discipline rooted in love and structure is vital. When parents oppose every correction, they raise entitled children. Tomorrow, these same children may insult or even harm the parents who once defended their defiance.
Teachers are not enemies. They are builders. Their chalk shapes minds. Their words mold futures. Their firm hands are not fists of harm but tools of instruction.
Parents should learn to correct in private, and support in public. There is need for dialogue, not disgrace. Your cooperation is what nurtures trust, hope, and change.
Teachers, your sacrifice is not in vain. Heaven records what man ignores. The society should give respect to the teacher, for without them, there is no doctor, no judge, no future.
