THE SWAHILI STATES USED FLUSH TOILETS BY THE 1200s
The Swahili City States are often overlooked, but a lot was happening in that region during their peak!

Gedi stands as one of the greatest sites of African archaeology. It was a very advanced Swahili city-state on Kenya’s 🇰🇪 coast, that was established in the 13th century. Its urban design reveals sophisticated planning, with carefully laid-out streets, fresh water wells, an advanced sanitation network, bathroom drainage systems, and even overhead basins used to flush toilets.

Gedi was built by the Swahili people, but despite its great development, the reason for its sudden abandonment remains an unsolved mystery.
