THE Okpu Agu is an Ohafia-Igbo traditional hat.
It’s much older than every other Igbo traditional hat/cap.
Like other Igbo traditional hats, Okpu-Agu has its origin and serves a unique purpose.
Okpu Agu originated from Ohafia.
Okpu is a cap/hat/crown/ trophy in the Ohafia/Igbo language
Agu is a leopard in the Ohafia/ Igbo language.
And leopard is one of the bravest, strongest, and most dangerous animals in the world.
In Ohafia-Igbo land, a strong, brave, and courageous person is referred to as Agu. Anyone who attained bravery is also referred to as Agu.
Okpu Agu was a hat given to people who attained bravery in honor and recognition of their bravery back then in Ohafia.
In the ancient past, the Ohafia people were known for their wár prowess. They engaged in many wãrs and won. They behēad people they k!lled in the wãrs and bring their heads home as proof of courage, might, and honor. The heads were kept in the Agbala ikoro as souvenirs.
So in the ancient times,Anyone who went to wãr and brought home a human head is given Okpu Agu as a mark of recognition in honor of his bravery.
Also, anyone who k!lled a danger0us animal or attains bravery is given Okpu Agu as a prize for his bravery. He can wear it in traditional ceremonies as proof of courage, might, and honor.
Anyone who has gone to wãr and did not succeed in bringing home a hụman head or has not attained bravery was ineligible to wear Okpu Agu.
Okpu Agu symbolizes manliness and its attendant bravery, strength, warrior, ability, struggle, effort, and excellence.
It’s prohibited for a young woman to wear Okpu Agu. Any young woman who wears it will pay severely.
However, a young woman who attained bravery and a woman traditionalist who has made a good reputation for her community or Ohafia at large can wear it, But only in her old age, when she must have stopped seeing her menstruation. That’s because once a woman stopped menstruating she’s considered a man.
THE SYMBOLISM.
For years, there have been prevailing misconception about the Okpu-Agu design and the color. Some believe that it represents the tiger’s coat, while others think it symbolizes a lion’s attack,with the colors holding specific meaning.
White: the tissue underneath human skin.
Red :blood.
Black :saw or decay or rot.
However, this interpretation are inaccurate.
According to oral tradition , Okpu-Agu was initially crafted with Ram beards (nzebulu)in the ancient time . Over the time, its production evolved to incorporate three unique colors of the wool: black, red and white.
The three colors used in designing Okpu-Agu holds deep historical and the cultural significance, conveying meaningful stories and values.
The modern Okpu-Agu design starts with white, followed by Black ,and then Red. In contrast, ancient design begin with black, proceded to red and then white.
The colors of Okpu-Agu hold deep significance:black represents mourning and remembrance of Ohafia fallen heroes, red symbolizes war and the blood shed during war while white signifies victory and jubilation.
However, as peace dawned ,the Ohafia people rebranded the Okpu-Agu, reordering its color to celebrate their triumph: white symbolizing victory now proceed black, honoring fallen heroes, and Red representing war and sacrifices.
Today, Okpu Agu has become the embodiment of respect, pride, and honor.
It now serves as our identity and our traditional hat. It has no secrecy.No imposed age bracket for usage(for men)
But it’s still prohibited for young women to wear it in some communities in Ohafia. While in some communities, women wear it on a remarkable tradition that’s celebrated once in a leap year
