In 1963, Lieutenant-Colonel Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu was appointed as the first indigenous Quartermaster-General of the Nigerian Army.
As a Quartermaster-General, he was in charge of all army supplies including uniforms, weapons, food, fuel, and medical supplies.
During his tenure, he initiated significant reforms such as modernizing the army’s uniforms and commencing their local production in Nigeria.
Prior to these changes, Nigerian soldiers wore colonial-era uniforms -typically shorts-that were manufactured in Britain and shipped to Nigeria.
