Truth Seekers, Did you know?
The First designs of the Statue of Liberty envisoned the Black woman breaking free from chains, symbolizing the end of slavery. The statue was a gift from France to the United States, commemorating the centennial of American independence and celebrating the abolition of slavery.
Early designs by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi did include a Black woman breaking free from chains, intended to represent the end of slavery in the United States, according to the Statue of Liberty National Monument.
In this version, the statue keeps Lady Liberty’s right hand in the familiar position we see today — raised high in the air holding the infamous illuminated torch. Her left hand however, carried broken shackles, paying tribute to the end of slavery.
The broken shackles and chains are still part of the statue’s symbolism, but they are located at her feet, under the drapery, rather than being prominently held in hand.
Eventually, the final design was transformed, depicting a draped woman representing the Roman goddess Libertas.
We must restore the Truth!
