In the early 1960s, just before the Biafra War, the Eastern Region had the highest school enrollment and literacy rate in Nigeria.
From 1960 to 1967, over 90% of children in the East were enrolled in primary schools.
Missionary and community-led schools flourished
University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria’s first indigenous university was built in the East in 1960.
A testament to Igbo people’s passion for education.
In fact, the Eastern Region was nicknamed “The African Japan” because of how fast it was developing, led by education, trade, and innovation.
All of this was before oil money, before the war, and before federal allocations.
It was built on the Igbo belief in self-help, community, and knowledge.
