Historical accounts from the 1800s, including one by Gevrey in 1870, describe early French officials arriving on the island in 1844. The French documented that at that time, towns like Moroni (now capital of Comoros) were fortified with stone walls about three meters high, reinforced by small square towers that only allowed foot traffic.

While much of the detailed history of these ancient gates remains unclear, two of the most well-known peace gates on the island were Fuu la Salama in Fumbuni and Goba la Salama in Kwambani, which were once seen as symbols of diplomacy and order.
