The Pyrate confraternity also known as the National Association of Seadogs was founded in 1952
The Pyrate confraternity also known as the National Association of Seadogs was founded in 1952 at the University College Ibadan (now University of Ibadan) by a group of students known as the Magnificent Seven. They include: Wole Soyinka (Nobel laureate), Ralph Opara, Pius Oleghe, Ikpehare Aig-Imoukhuede, Nathaniel Oyelola, Olumuyiwa Awe, and Sylvanus U. Egbuche..
The association was formed as a response to the prevailing class privilege, elitism, and indifference to social realities in Nigeria, particularly among students from middle-class backgrounds and colonial elites.
Their activities were initially open and transparent, and they aimed to promote peace, justice, and equity. However modern-day cultism in Nigerian universities has taken on a different form, often associated with violence and negative activities
