End the Culture of Political Threats Before 2027
End the Culture of Political Threats Before 2027
Nigeria, a richly diverse nation of over 200 million people, must never become hostage to political extremism or ethnic intimidation. As the 2027 general elections approach, the nation is already witnessing the re-emergence of a dangerous trend: political supporters issuing violent threats to intimidate fellow citizens into voting for their preferred candidates. A chilling example is the statement attributed to Alilat A. Ademola, a self-proclaimed supporter of President Tinubu, who reportedly threatened that if Tinubu loses in 2027, “we will kpai all Hausas and Igbos in Lagos.” This is not mere political banter, it is HATE SPEECH, INCITEMENT to genocide, and a CRIME against the Nigerian state.
History must not repeat itself. The 2023 elections were marred by threats, suppression, and ethnic profiling, especially in Lagos where voters were intimidated and punished for not aligning with dominant political interests. Yet, no one has been held accountable. The silence of law enforcement and the political class emboldens such recklessness.
In Proverbs 14:34, the Bible says, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” Political violence and tribal threats are reproaches, sins that degrade our democracy and endanger national unity. God, the creator of all nations (Acts 17:26), is not the author of confusion or division. Nigeria belongs to no tribe, no party, no region, it belongs to ALL Nigerians.
We must not normalize evil. The Federal Government, security agencies, and civil society must speak up and act now. Electoral offenders, no matter their affiliations, must face justice. As written in Ecclesiastes 8:11, “Because the sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.” Silence is complicity.
2027 must not become a repeat of 2023. Nigerians must reject tribalism, condemn threats, and demand accountability.
Democracy thrives when every citizen can vote freely and live without fear.
Let us rise, not in hatred, but in unity, to protect our nation from descending into darkness. Nigeria is ours to build, not to destroy.
