After Abacha’s sudden de@th in June 1998, his successor, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, initiated a transition toward civilian rule.
As part of this process, Obasanjo was released from pr!son, signaling new hope for Nigeria’s future. Obasanjo’s release, after about three years in detention, paved the way for his return to politics.
