Gregory Anthony Isaacs OD (15 July 1951-25 October 2010) was a legendary Jamaican reggae artist, widely acclaimed as “the most exquisite vocalist in reggae” and nicknamed “The Cool Ruler” for his smooth, laid-back singing style and stage presence. He was pivotal in popularizing lovers rock and roots reggae through a career spanning over four decades with an estimated 500+ albums released worldwide.
Isaacs began recording in 1968 and,in 1973,
co-founded the Africa Museum record label and shop with Errol Dunkley, producing one of the first lovers rock hits, ” My Only Lover”.He worked with many top producers in the 1970s,
creating a mix of romantic ballads and socially conscious songs.His 1974 hit “Love Is Overdue ” hit number one in Jamaica.By the late 1970s, he was an international reggae star, touring extensively in the UK and US, rivaling artists like Bob Marley and Dennis Brown.
His classic album Night Nurse ( co-produced by Errol Brown) achieved substantial success,especially in Britain, cementing his reputation for smooth reggae. Isaacs also faced struggles with drug addition and legal issues, including a brief imprisonment in the 1980s, but he continued to produce influential music and tour globally.
Isaacs received multiple Grammy nominations and was honoured with the Jamaican Order of Distinction in 2010, shortly before his death from lung cancer in London the same year. His legacy endures as one of reggae’s most soulful and prolific voices, celebrated for his romantic and roots reggae contributions and regarded as a true icon in the genre. (By Conrad Fadah 🇰🇪)
