Meet Muhammadu Gambo Jimeta – Nigeria’s Tireless Police Officer

Born on April 15, 1937, in Jimeta, Adamawa State, Muhammadu Gambo Jimeta started from a humble background and rose to become one of Nigeria’s most respected police officers. He served as Nigeria’s 7th Inspector General of Police from 1986 to 1990, during a very important time in the country’s history.

His education began at Jimeta Elementary School (1947–1949), then he attended Yola Middle School, Bauchi Provincial Secondary School, and Government College Keffi. In 1959, he joined the Nigeria Police College in Kaduna and Ikeja, starting his long and successful career in the police force.

To sharpen his skills, he trained in several top institutions:

  • Detective Training School in Wakefield, UK (1962)
  • Bramshill Police College, UK (1963)
  • International Police Academy, Washington D.C. (1980)
  • National Police Academy, Cairo, Egypt

He climbed the police ranks one step at a time:

  • Cadet Sub-Inspector in 1959
  • ASP in 1963
  • DSP in 1967
  • Chief Superintendent in 1972
  • Assistant Commissioner of Police in 1974
  • Commissioner of Police in Lagos (1977)
  • Assistant Inspector General in 1982
  • Deputy Inspector General in 1984
  • Inspector General of Police in 1986 under President Ibrahim Babangida

After retiring in 1990, he continued serving the nation. He was later made the Coordinator of National Security and in 2011, joined the Presidential Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy.

Muhammadu Gambo Jimeta died on January 21, 2021, at the age of 83. He was buried in Abuja, remembered for his life of discipline, service, and dedication to Nigeria’s safety.
