Meet Lt. Col. U. K. Bello — A Brave Soldier from Niger State

Lt. Col. U. K. Bello was a courageous officer from Niger State and served as the ADC (aide-de-camp) to General Ibrahim Babangida during the 1990 coup led by Gideon Orkar.

When the coup began, he quickly helped Babangida and his family escape from Dodan Barracks to a safe location. After ensuring their safety, he bravely returned to the barracks to help loyal soldiers fight back.

Bello was an expert in using armored tanks. There was a tank near the Head of State’s residence, and he got inside to operate it.

Sadly, he didn’t know that the safety pins had been secretly removed by the tank’s engineer two days earlier. That engineer was part of the coup.

While Bello was inside the tank, the coup plotters got close and killed him. He gave his life protecting his commander.

His body was later taken to Paiko Village, where he was buried with great sorrow and respect.
