“Why Do Igbo Politicians Fade Once They Get to Abuja?” — Chima Obi Poses a Question Many Are Reluctant to Voice
As soon as they touch down in Abuja, their shine seems to fade.
Take Dr. Chris Ngige, who was once a political superstar in the East but has now slipped into the shadows from when he became Minister of Labour till now. Then there’s Rochas Okorocha, Anyim Pius Anyim, Ken Nnamani, Orji Uzor Kalu, Enyinnaya Abaribe… the list goes on.
Chima Obi is probing: What’s happened to the charisma of our leaders? Why do they vanish from the national spotlight?
He draws a comparison to the icons of the first and second republics — Zik, Mbakwe, Ojukwu, Nwafor-Orizu, CC Onoh — men who commanded respect both regionally and nationally, and who returned to their communities when out of power, rather than hanging around Abuja seeking favors.
Here are his bold observations:
Igbo politicians today seem to lack the sense of when to step back with dignity.
They’ve lost their self-respect and instead find themselves begging for positions and contracts.
They’ve shifted from leading to lobbying northern counterparts with millions and billions for juicy positions.
Their absence at home creates a void, unlike past leaders who drew strength from their people.
And then there’s Peter Obi — the one standout, forging a different path by staying connected to the grassroots, upholding dignity, and speaking truth to power.
Obi isn’t begging. He’s building. And the people are noticing the difference.
So, we echo Chima Obi’s question:
What are our so-called Igbo leaders still doing in Abuja when they’re no longer in office? Why not return home and genuinely lead?
