Nigeria played an active role in supporting other nations especially in Africa during their struggles for independence, anti-colonial liberation, and anti-apartheid movements.
1)- Southern Africa (Anti-Apartheid & Liberation Struggles)
South Africa 🇿🇦 – Strong diplomatic, financial, and logistical support to the African National Congress (ANC) and Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) during apartheid. Nigeria contributed millions of dollars to the Southern African Relief Fund and adopted the slogan “Africa has no business being free until South Africa is free.”
Namibia 🇳🇦 – Supported SWAPO (South West Africa People’s Organization) in its fight against South African rule. Nigeria provided funds, scholarships, and diplomatic backing until Namibia gained independence in 1990.
Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 (formerly Rhodesia) – Backed the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) and Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU) against white-minority rule, provided training camps and financial aid until independence in 1980.
Angola 🇦🇴– Recognized the MPLA (Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola) early, providing diplomatic and some material support during its war for independence and subsequent civil war.
Mozambique 🇲🇿 – Supported FRELIMO (Mozambique Liberation Front) in its struggle against Portuguese colonialism.
2)- West & Central Africa
Guinea 🇬🇳– When France withdrew all aid after Guinea voted “No” to joining the French Community in 1958, Nigeria (then newly independent) sent financial and logistical support.
SĂŁo TomĂ© and PrĂncipe 🇸🇹 Backed the MLSTP (Movement for the Liberation of SĂŁo TomĂ© and PrĂncipe) during the independence struggle against Portugal.
Equatorial Guinea 🇬🇶 Supported independence from Spain in 1968.
3)- East Africa
Kenya 🇰🇪 , Provided diplomatic support to the Mau Mau cause and later developmental aid after independence.
Uganda 🇺🇬 & Tanzania 🇹🇿 ,While not colonial struggles at that time, Nigeria assisted them in post-independence conflicts and peace efforts.
4)-Beyond Africa
Nigeria also offered solidarity to liberation movements outside Africa, such as the Palestinian cause (through the PLO) and anti-colonial movements in the Caribbean and Pacific, although the strongest support was for African struggles.
Nigeria also played a significant role in helping Liberia 🇱🇷 and Sierra Leone 🇸🇱, particularly through its leadership and contributions to ECOWAS peacekeeping missions.
Nigeria played a role in supporting Ethiopia 🇪🇹 during the Italian invasion. A strong nationalist movement in Nigeria, fueled by the press, organized committees, mass meetings, and fundraising efforts to support Ethiopia.
