AFRICA:

  • Thomas Sankara (Burkina Faso): Revolutionary leader who served as President of Burkina Faso from 1983 to 1987. Known for his anti-imperialist policies, focus on self-sufficiency, and commitment to social justice.
  • Patrice Lumumba (Democratic Republic of Congo): The first Prime Minister of the independent Democratic Republic of Congo. His pan-Africanist views and attempts to nationalize resources led to his assassination in 1961.
  • Steve Biko (South Africa): Anti-apartheid activist and founder of the Black Consciousness Movement in South Africa. Died in police custody in 1977, becoming a martyr for the struggle against racial segregation.
  • Amílcar Cabral (Guinea-Bissau & Cape Verde): A leading figure in the liberation movements of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde. An intellectual and revolutionary theorist, he was assassinated in 1973.
  • Dedan Kimathi (Kenya): A leader of the Mau Mau uprising against British colonial rule in Kenya during the 1950s. He was captured and executed in 1957 but remains a national hero.
  • Kwame Nkrumah (Ghana): The first Prime Minister and President of Ghana, leading the country to independence in 1957. A major advocate of Pan-Africanism and the Organization of African Unity.
  • Samora Machel (Mozambique): The first President of Mozambique after its independence from Portugal. A Marxist-Leninist revolutionary, he led FRELIMO in the struggle for independence and later died in a plane crash.
  • Nelson Mandela (South Africa): Anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician, and philanthropist who spent 27 years in prison for his activism. He served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, playing a key role in the transition to a multi-racial democracy.
  • Gamal Abdel Nasser (Egypt): The second President of Egypt, leading the country from 1956 until his death in 1970. A key figure in the Non-Aligned Movement and a proponent of Arab nationalism and socialism.
  • Robert Gabriel Mugabe : Former President of Zimbabwe who led Land reform program and took back land from British settlers and that got Zimbabwe sanctioned. He is an inspiration to all African countries seeking to take back land from colonial rule

DIASPORA:

  • Marcus Garvey (Jamaica): A political activist, publisher, entrepreneur, and orator who advocated for Pan-Africanism and the unification of the African diaspora. Founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA).
  • Malcolm X (United States): An African-American Muslim minister and human rights activist. A prominent figure in the Nation of Islam, he advocated for Black empowerment and self-defense.
  • Angela Davis (United States): A political activist, philosopher, academic, and author. She emerged as a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Power Movement.
  • Frantz Fanon (Martinique): A psychiatrist, philosopher, revolutionary, and writer whose works are influential in the fields of post-colonial studies, critical theory, and Marxism.
  • CLR James (Trinidad and Tobago): A historian, journalist, writer, and Marxist theorist. His work explored themes of colonialism, revolution, and the struggles of the working class.
  • Fela Kuti (Nigeria): A musician, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and human rights activist. Known as the pioneer of Afrobeat music, his songs often criticized corruption and social injustice.
