Yams is one of, if not the most, revered crops in Ala Igbo.
It is the only known crop celebrated by the entire Igbo land through the New Yam Festival, called Emume Iri Ji Ọhụrụ.
The celebration is an act of appreciation to Chi Ala, Ifejiọkụ, for a bountiful harvest during the farming season. The festival begins with Ịkụ Ikoro and unfolds into several cultural activities.
Farmers also come together to contest for the prestigious title of Di Ji, an honor given to the person with the biggest yam harvest.
Chimefula Research Centre is currently live in Ụmụchu to witness this celebration. We have joined some farmers to document the process.
