Nigeria’s Silenced Voice in the Global Arena

Nigeria’s Silenced Voice in the Global Arena

The question, “Who is speaking for Nigeria in the world right now?” echoes like a trumpet in a wilderness.

Since September 2023, when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recalled all 109 ambassadors without appointing replacements, Nigeria has been left voiceless on the international stage. Diplomacy, the very lifeline of global recognition, has been crippled by silence.

Ambassadors are not ceremonial figures; they are the face and voice of a nation abroad. They negotiate trade deals, secure international partnerships, protect citizens, and advance national interests.

Historically, strong diplomacy has lifted nations. For instance, after World War II, the United States’ Marshall Plan was successfully negotiated through diplomacy, reshaping Europe’s recovery. Where there is no representation, there is no influence.

Scripture affirms this principle: “If the trumpet gives an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?” (1 Corinthians 14:8).

Without ambassadors, Nigeria’s trumpet is silent, leaving her unprepared for the global “battle” of politics, trade, and security.

The silence is already costing us. In July 2025, when the U.S. President Donald Trump invited five African leaders for high-level talks, Senegal, Gabon, Liberia, Guinea-Bissau, and Mauritania, Nigeria, once considered Africa’s giant, was conspicuously absent.

This is more than political exclusion; it is symbolic of Nigeria’s dwindling relevance. Proverbs 29:18 warns: “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” A government that cannot maintain its diplomatic voice is a government without vision.

Even Nigeria’s own Foreign Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, admitted that ambassadorial nominees had been submitted long ago, yet no action has followed. This reflects a dangerous centralization of power, where governance is reduced to the whims of one man. Nigeria is too great a nation to be run as a private club or a muted WhatsApp group.

No one builds a nation by silencing it abroad. The absence of ambassadors projects unseriousness, weakens our influence, and abandons millions of Nigerians overseas.

True leadership empowers institutions, delegates responsibility, and ensures representation at home and abroad.

Nigeria deserves a government that does not only fight for her internally but also gives her a strong, respected voice on the global stage.
