OPEN LETTER TO AFRICAN LEADERS: THE TIME FOR BOLD ACTION IS NOW

Dear Esteemed African Leaders,

It is with a profound sense of urgency, frustration, and disillusionment that I address you today. As representatives of a continent rich in resources, history, and potential, we find ourselves at a crossroads—a moment demanding courage and decisive action. The current status quo within the United Nations, particularly the glaring absence of Africa’s rightful voice in the Security Council, is unacceptable and shameful.

Africa’s contributions to global development, economy, and civilization are undeniable. Our ancestors built civilizations, cultivated knowledge, and played pivotal roles in shaping Western history and progress. Yet, today, we are relegated to being mere spectators at the United Nations, with no seat at the table where decisions that affect us are made. It is an insult to our sovereignty and a betrayal of our collective dignity.

Why should African nations remain as passive “chairs warmer” at the UN Assembly, watching from the sidelines while others determine our fate? The principle of justice and equity dictates that Africa, as a continent of over 1.4 billion people, must have a meaningful and direct voice in global security and governance. The current structure—devoid of African representation in the Security Council—embodies a form of global injustice that must be rectified.

The time has come for us to recognize that remaining within this flawed system without demanding change is tantamount to accepting marginalization. If we continue to cower and tolerate exclusion, we risk perpetuating our subservience and undermining our own sovereignty. Let us ask ourselves: Are we fools to accept a seat at the table where we possess no power or influence?

The call for true unity among African nations is urgent. As Captain Ibrahim Traore, a visionary leader from Burkina Faso, rightly emphasized: “African leaders must come together as one indivisible entity.” We must forge a collective front, speak with one voice, and pursue a strategic disengagement from the ineffective and unjust structures that deny us dignity.

There are compelling reasons why African nations should consider pulling out of the United Nations:

  1. LOSS OF SOVEREIGN AUTHORITY:The UN Security Council’s permanent members have veto power that often blocks meaningful action on issues vital to Africa. Our interests are consistently sidelined, and our voices silenced.
  2. HISTORICAL MARGINALIZATION: Our continent’s history within the UN is one of neglect and underrepresentation. Continued participation without reform perpetuates this marginalization.
  3. GLOBAL INEQUITY:* The current global governance framework reflects the interests of a few powerful nations, not the diverse realities of Africa. We must create alternative mechanisms where our voices are heard and respected.
  4. DEMAND FOR JUSTICE AND EQUITY:Africa deserves an equal seat at the global table—an African Security Council, a true reflection of our significance and contributions.
  5. STRATEGIC REPOSITIONING: Leaving the UN, or threatening to do so, would be a powerful statement of our collective discontent and a catalyst for real reform in international governance.

In conclusion, African leaders must rise above the transactional politics of the past. It is time to unite, disengage from a flawed system, and forge new paths that prioritize our sovereignty, dignity, and future. We owe this to our ancestors, to the present generation, and most importantly, to the generations yet unborn.

Let this be the moment we act decisively—not in despair, but with a shared vision of a truly independent Africa that commands respect on the global stage.
