He didn’t know Kimathi by face. But he knew the reward. And when he saw a man in leopard skin trying to cross a ditch at dawn, he fired. That bullet tore through Kimathi’s thigh and through the heart of Kenya’s resistance.

The British declared a holiday. But the people mourned.
