THE KING TESTED HIMSELF ON A MAID TO KNOW IF HE IS CABLE OF FATHERING A CHILD
Episode 10
Amaka stands there contemplating whether to talk or not, she was lost in thoughts.
Amaka: I think this is the right time and the only opportunity for me to tell the king the truth, I can’t keep it to myself forever I need to open up to the king, but I don’t know if he will believe me, he is supposed to believe me because he knows how he met me, I will tell him if he doubts me I can swear for anything to prove the truth. I can’t hide it any longer I might not get this opportunity again. I believe God will see me through. Amaka thought in her mind.
Unaware to her that the king is under a spell.
The king or should I say everybody is waiting for Amaka to talk, “Amaka why are you not saying anything? Are you scared of the person? Don’t be scared, any man who gets a woman pregnant should be ready to take responsibility,” the King said.
“Amaka, my beautiful daughter, just tell the king who got you pregnant among the guards, he knows the best way to handle it,” her grandma said. All eyes are on her waiting to hear who she will mention.
Why is the king asking me who got me pregnant? Or did he suddenly forget what he did to me? Or how he met me? Well, if he has forgotten I will remind him today that he is the owner of my pregnancy.
Because if I don’t speak now that I got the opportunity, everyone will think I don’t know who is responsible for the pregnancy.
But I’m scared of these two Queens especially the senior one, I don’t know what she might do to me, but I believe the king will protect me knowing that I’m carrying his heir. Amaka said.
King Azuka: “Will it take you forever to mention the name of the person who got you pregnant? Or you don’t know who is responsible?” King Azuka asked.
He is so annoying, imagine asking me if I don’t know who is responsible whereas he is responsible. Amaka said in her mind. Chioma who was standing nearby was indirectly signaling Amaka that she shouldn’t talk.
“Oh, this girl thinks she can spoil my plan, God please don’t allow her to tell the king,” Chioma whispered in her mind.
“No Chioma I won’t listen to you now, I must tell the king the truth, I have made up my mind,” Amaka said but still scared.
“We have waited enough Amaka, so if you aren’t ready to talk you can leave it, no one is pressuring you,” King Azuka said.
“No, no, I must not miss this opportunity because I might not get it again, I have to tell him now, this is the right time,” Amaka whispered to herself.
“God please help me, what kind of problem is this?”
King Azuka: “Amaka you can go inside and rest, everyone dismissed,” the king said.
“No, my king I have to say the truth, because I have kept it for a while that almost led to my death.”
“My king you are the one responsible for my pregnancy,” Amaka said with a trembling voice but everyone heard it.
Everywhere became quiet for some seconds. The king finally found a voice, “Amaka did I just hear you say I am the one responsible for that pregnancy?” he asked again to be sure. “Yes my king, I swear with my life you are the one responsible,” Amaka replied. The king kept quiet for some seconds, maybe trying to remember something probably, but no one really knew the reason for his silence.
Queen Ijeoma laughed out loudly, “Have you gone nuts? Like are you really okay? Have you completely lost it? Oh it seems the pill has affected your fish brain. Do you forget my husband had 2 beautiful wives for over 5 years now and he couldn’t get any of us pregnant? Almost everyone in this Uzuola kingdom knows that the king is not capable of fathering a child. So what are you saying? Are you really sure you are okay?”
Queen Ijeoma said.
“Yes my Queen I’m saying nothing but the truth, the king is the one responsible for the pregnancy, I’m not lying, I can swear with anything.” Amaka said crying.
Mama Ebere, Amaka’s grandmother, couldn’t believe what Amaka was saying. Was Amaka saying the truth? But how? Let me just hear what the king has to say about this. The old woman whispered to herself.
“You still have the guts to say you are saying the truth? You must be punished for lying against the king just because he can’t father a child, yes you will be punished, because you can’t go free after lying against my husband, a king. Guards come and take her,” Queen Ijeoma said.
“Hold it there, can you just shut up and let the king speak? You are not the king, you are a queen so why passing judgment when the king is still standing right here?” Queen Ngozi said.
“How dare you intrude in my command? Do you forget I’m the senior Queen?” Queen Ijeoma asked.
The king who had been silent since, for God knows why — maybe he was trying to remember anything or think straight — finally spoke.
“Can you both keep quiet? And let me speak,” the king said. Everywhere became silent again, even the maids whispering among themselves kept quiet too.
“Amaka, if not for one condition that God just saved you from the hands of death, I would have punished you severely. How dare you lie against me, against the throne? Like the Queen said just now, I am not capable of fathering a child. If at all I am capable, I have been married to these two women for over five years and none of them could conceive. They should have gotten pregnant, but none has ever been pregnant.
So how come you said I am responsible for the pregnancy? Like when did I have something with you?” King Azuka said angrily.
That last statement hurt Amaka.
“My king I’m not lying please believe me, I will never give such a lie, you are the one responsible, have you forgotten so soon what happened between us? Please believe me, it was that one time that got me pregnant. And you know how it happened, or you can call the debiah, I’m ready to swear with anything,” Amaka said crying.
“If only the king knew that we are the ones with the problem, not himself,” Ngozi whispered silently to herself.
“You this useless girl, I’m pretty sure you heard what the king said? But in case you don’t, let me remind you. He said that he is not capable of fathering a child, so that alone should be enough for you to know that there’s no place for your lies. You think you can force a bastard on the king because he doesn’t have a child? Any one more word from you, you will have yourself to blame,” Queen Ijeoma said.
“So get your miserable self out of here and go and look for who is responsible for that bastard in your womb.”
“My king, I have been keeping quiet since but I must say one thing. I trust my daughter, she is not a girl that behaves anyhow, and I know my Amaka will never lie such lies against anybody not to talk of you, king. I guess you should do something, just anything to find out whether she is lying or not before it’s too late,” Mama Ebere said.
Amaka walked closer to her grandmother.
“Mama thank you for believing me even when nobody does.”
“Don’t worry my daughter, I believe you.”
“Enough of all this nonsense talk, you old woman listen to me. I believe you heard what the king said — he said he is not the one responsible for it. He is not a baby that he won’t know if he had something with your daughter, and he fully knows that he can’t father a child. Why is your granddaughter trying to force a pregnancy on my husband? This conversation is over, everyone dismissed,” Queen Ijeoma shouted angrily.
“Yes the discussion is over, everyone leave,” King Azuka said. Everyone started leaving with words to gossip about.
“My king I’m very disappointed that after what you did to me, you are here denying it. You know how you met me, that I was still pure when you met me, so I wonder why you are denying me,” Amaka said crying.
“My king I’m going to tell you for the last time, you are the one responsible for my pregnancy, please don’t deny me, you have to take responsibility for me, please I don’t have anybody except my grandma and she is old, I’m the one taking care of her, where do you want me to go from here?” Amaka said still crying.
King Azuka had tried hard to remember anything, but he couldn’t remember anything.
“Amaka I can’t remember having anything with you, I’m not responsible for the pregnancy, you are just accusing me,” King Azuka said walking inside, leaving Amaka standing in shame and confusion.
“You see? The king said he is not responsible for that bastard you are carrying, but you are still trying to frame him. If you know what is good for you let me not hear this nonsense in your mouth again,” Queen Ijeoma said walking after the king.
Amaka stood there confused and crying, “God what should I do now? Where do I go from here now? My only hope has denied me, what else will I do?
I wish I didn’t wake, I wish I just died.”
“Stop it my daughter, stop saying bad words,” her grandmother said walking closer to her.
“My daughter, now I know the truth, I’m proud of you, I’m happy you were bold enough to say the truth even though he denied it, the God of Truth will be with you,” Amaka’s grandma said.
“Thank you mama for believing me even though this is the first time you are hearing me, you didn’t judge me, thank you mama,” Amaka said hugging her grandmother while her tears dropped on her grandma’s back.
“It is okay my daughter, God will provide a way, let’s go inside and rest first.”
Chioma, whose heart had been filled with so much joy that the king denied Amaka’s pregnancy, pretended to feel concerned.
She walked closer to Amaka. “Amaka don’t worry everything will be fine, just believe in God,” she said pretending.
“Thank you my dear friend I appreciate the concern,” they both hugged.
