I remember when Nigeria had 19 States:
I remember when Nigeria had 19 States:
My State Governor was Professor Ambrose Alli.
Up Bendel…..
Just like Ex-CBN Gov Professor Charles Soludo, Governor of present day Anambra State, we had a State Governor in 1979 who was a former Central Bank Governor, in the person of Dr Clement Isong of Cross Rivers State.
The first Governor to be impeached was one of these 19 State Governors, he was Governor of Kaduna State, check his name on the list.
It was amongst the 19 State Governors that the first Executive Governor to die in office happened, that was Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Muhammadu Shehu Kangiwa, he died in November 1981, falling from a horse while playing polo in the 1981 edition of the Georgian League. He also in 1981, increased the number of Local Government Areas in the state from 19 to 32. However his successor Colonel Garba Duba reversed this measure in 1984.
I remember these 19 States, the there wasn’t Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi States, all we had was Anambra and Imo State.
Gongola State was a beautiful name, I remember that Chief Raymond Dokpesi served as Chief of Staff to Governor of Gongola State back then for a brief moment before the Khaki Boys struck.
What else you know about one of the 19 States? Let’s hear you.
