It all started in 1999 after Obasanjo was as elected president. Obasanjo becoming president was as a result of the demise of MKO Abiola. To compensate Yoruba people, the existing political parties featured two Yoruba contestants, one supported by powerful northern elites, the other supported by Yoruba people and other intellectuals. Obasanjo emerged as president over Chief Olu Falae. Obasanjo who was familiar with the structure of Nigeria decided to do a few adjustments here and there to ensure other minorities here and there were not excluded from being involved or feel alienated from the political process. It offended some Arewa power mongers. The one way they chose to fight Obasanjo was to frustrate his campaign for foreign investment to come over to Nigeria. They simply did that by starting the campaign for Sharia Law in the North. Sharia was a total hit. Music of Arewa went berserk. Sharia Law implementation and protest against it would lead to mayhem where thousands were killed.

In response to Sharia mayhem, Yoruba groups like the Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) declared war on Northern Nigerians in Oduduwa region. Hundreds were killed. When the politics of violence between Arewa Muslims and Yoruba defenders was going on, Ralph Uwuzuruike started the agitation for Biafra. The Biafran agitation was peaceful, but it was that one that would rattle the Nigerian government.

Under Sharia and Islam, Arewa continued to misbehave and undermine Obasanjo’s government. It simply led to chaos. By 2000, a major riot has broken out in Kaduna between Christians and Muslims over Sharia. Muslims attacked Christians protesting against implementation of Sharia in the state and it would escalate to complete mayhem. In 2001, Osama bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda hit the United States in a coordinated terror attack. The US quickly gave the government of Afghanistan under Mullah Omar an ultimatum to hand Osama bin Laden or face her wrath. Mullah Omar, a friend indeed, refused to handover Osama. The US kept to their words, they launched their war on terror on Afghanistan. As anti-war protesters around the globe hit the streets to protest against war, Nigerian Muslims who had been celebrating the terror attack on the US joined the protest. Barely a month after the US war campaign in Afghanistan started, Kano would erupt into mayhem as Muslims would attack Christians where hundreds were killed. I remembered Olusegun Obasanjo cutting down his trip to France and coming to Kano to see the atrocities. When it was clear that the Sharia Law of the federal government has failed, the likes of Mohammed Yusuf, founders of Boko Haram decided to take it to another level, they started a movement in which they would later start their own Sharia and rejected democracy. It led to the conflict that would lead to the killing of Mohammed Yusuf and many of his members. They went underground and would resurface about a year later under the leadership of Sheikh Abubakar Ibn Shekau.
