International human rights lawyer Elia Gerasoulis has sharply criticised the Nigerian government over what he described as a “ridiculous and dangerous” attempt to have the Biafran independence movement designated as a terrorist organisation by the United States.

Reacting to the claim, Gerasoulis dismissed the idea as absurd, noting that the Biafran movement maintains longstanding and friendly ties with several U.S. officials.

“The fact that the Nigerian government would think the United States would designate the Biafran independence movement as a terrorist organisation is comical and laughable,” he said.

He questioned Nigeria’s security narrative, accusing the government of misdirecting blame while extremist violence continues elsewhere.

“According to Nigeria, Igbo Christians are now the terrorists instead of Boko Haram?” Gerasoulis asked.

Issuing a strong warning, the human rights lawyer said any renewed attempt to push such a request could trigger serious international consequences for Nigeria.

“If the Nigerian government dares to make such a request again, the Biafra lobby has the right to push for Nigeria itself to be designated by the United States as an international state sponsor of terrorism,” he warned.
