Nigeria’s Unity Must Rest on Justice and Fairness — Chief Dan Ulasi Urges National Rethink, Calls for United Igbo Front

Chief Dan Ulasi, elder statesman and prominent Igbo leader, has used his birthday message to deliver a firm warning: Nigeria’s unity will remain fragile unless it is anchored on honesty, equity, and fairness.

He argued that repeated calls for national unity have failed because they ignore deep-rooted injustice, selective application of the law, and structural imbalance within the federation. According to him, unity cannot be imposed by slogans or force; it must be built on fair governance, equal opportunity, and mutual respect among Nigeria’s ethnic nationalities.

Chief Ulasi noted that Nigeria’s recurring political and social crises are symptoms of exclusion and inequity. He warned that marginalizing any group weakens the nation and fuels resentment, mistrust, and instability.

Speaking specifically on the Igbo question, he said the Igbo people remain committed to the Nigerian project despite historical setbacks and continued marginalization—but only within a system that guarantees justice and inclusion.

Turning inward, Chief Ulasi issued a strong call for unity within Igbo land. He stressed that internal divisions, rivalry, and lack of coordination have significantly reduced Igbo political influence and collective progress. Unity, he said, is no longer optional but essential.

He urged Igbo political leaders to abandon personal ambition and short-term gains in favor of collective interest, strategic cooperation, and a shared development vision. He also called on traditional rulers, youth groups, and civil society organizations to promote cohesion, cultural confidence, and disciplined leadership across Igbo communities.

Balancing patriotism with realism, Chief Ulasi reaffirmed his belief in a united Nigeria but insisted that such unity must be just, negotiated, and fair. Anything less, he warned, would continue to strain the country’s already fragile cohesion.

As Nigeria confronts economic hardship, insecurity, and rising ethnic tensions, his message adds weight to growing demands for honest dialogue and structural fairness. For Chief Dan Ulasi, the conclusion is clear: a fair Nigeria and a united Igbo land are not opposing goals, but mutually reinforcing necessities.
