The Asaba Ma$$acre was one of the darkest atrocities of the Nigerian Civil W@r. It occurred on 7 October 1967 in Asaba, a predominantly Igbo town on the western bank of the River Niger, in what was then the Mid-Western Region of Nigeria (now Delta State).
In August 1967, Biafran forces crossed the Niger and briefly occupied the Mid-West. When Nigerian federal troops later recaptured Asaba, the town’s Igbo population was suspected wrongly of supporting Biafra. This suspicion, fueled by ethnic profiling, w@r tension, and reprisals, set the stage for mass v!0lence against un@rmed civilians.
Federal soldiers ordered residents to assemble, assuring them it was for a “peace meeting.” Men and teenage boys were separated from women and children, lined up in groups, and sh0t at close range. The kpaing were systematic and br√tal. Women were f0rced to watch, many widowed in minutes.
About 1,200 to 1,400 un@rmed people were kpaied that day.
