The Nigeria-Biafra war ended on the 15th of January, 1970.
The war which began on the 6th of July 1967 because Biafra seceeded from Nigeria as a result of the progroms and killing of Igbo people and Gowon’s inability to keep to the Aburi Accord lasted for 30 months and cost Ndị Igbo a great deal in terms of lives, money and infrastructure.
It has been estimated that up to 3 million people died, mostly from hunger and disease caused by Nigerian forces.
It is said that every Igbo household lost a relative to the war.
More than half a million people died from the famine imposed deliberately through blockade throughout the war. Lack of medicine also contributed. Thousands of people starved to death every day as the war progressed.
The International Committee of the Red Cross in September 1968 estimated 8,000 to 10,000 death from starvation each.
The Nigerian army committed so many atrocities including deliberate bombing of civilians, mass slaughter with machine guns, and rape.
When the news to the end of the war was announced, the locals were joyfully seen chanting “Agha ebego, agha ebego”, meaning the war has ended, the war has ended.
While it is said that the war has ended, there are still question marks about if it has truly ended.
May the souls that was lost continue to rest in power 🙏🏿
Have you heard the story of the war before?
