HISTORY IS WHISPERING AGAIN — AND THIS TIME, THE NORTH IS LISTENING
A remarkable shift in tone is emerging from voices long associated with defending Nigeria’s unity at all costs.
Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed of the Northern Elders Forum delivered a message that cuts through decades of hardline rhetoric:
No Nigerian should welcome another war to keep this country together. The North already faces enormous challenges. A nation already struggling cannot survive the burden of another conflict.
Pause and understand the weight of that moment.
This is not the language of confrontation.
This is the language of memory.
In 1967, the declaration of Biafra plunged Nigeria into a brutal civil war. By 1970, more than a million lives had been lost. Hunger became a weapon. Trust between regions was shattered. The scars never fully healed.
Those who lived through that tragedy now speak with a different urgency: never again.
Even more striking, some northern groups have gone further — suggesting that if the demand for self-determination is truly the will of the people, then the path forward must be peaceful, lawful, and decided politically — not on the battlefield.
Let that reality sink in.
This is not coming from separatist movements.
This is not coming from activists in the South-East.
This is coming from northern elders who understand the cost of war — and the danger of ignoring genuine grievances.
What we are witnessing is not surrender.
It is pragmatism born from history.
Because unity enforced by force is fragile.
But unity built on justice, dialogue, and consent can endure.
The signal is unmistakable:
If the demand for self-determination reflects real public sentiment, the response must be political. Legal. Democratic. Thoughtful.
Not threats.
Not repression.
Not another chapter of blood.
Nigeria stands at a crossroads where wisdom must be louder than pride.
Because the alternative is a tragedy this nation has already lived through — and cannot afford to repeat.
