Professor Gilbert Obiafo Onuaguluchi stands among the foremost pioneers of medical education in Nigeria. Born on January 1, 1927, in Oji River (present-day Enugu State), he rose to become the first Nigerian Professor of Pharmacology and Therapeutics and later the pioneer Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, shaping the course of higher education in post-independence Nigeria.

Early Life and Education

Onuaguluchi began his secondary education at Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha (1941–1944). He proceeded to Yaba Higher College, one of the most prestigious colonial-era institutions in Nigeria, where he studied between 1945 and 1956.
He later attended University College Ibadan (1949–1951), the premier university institution in Nigeria at the time. Seeking further specialization, he trained at the Institute of Chest Diseases, University of London (1956), and later at the University of Glasgow (1959–1961), strengthening his expertise in medicine and pharmacology.

Medical and Academic Career

Professor Onuaguluchi began his professional service as a Medical Officer in Northern Nigeria (1951–1958). Between 1959 and 1962, he worked as a Research Assistant and Medical Registrar at Stobhill General Hospital, Glasgow.
In 1962, he joined the University of Ibadan as a Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Physician at University College Hospital, Ibadan. In May 1965, he achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Nigerian (and first African in Nigeria) appointed Professor of Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
Following the Nigerian Civil War, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Nigeria (1967–1972) and later became Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at its Enugu campus.

Pioneer Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos

In 1975, when the Federal Government established the University of Jos as an independent institution, Professor Onuaguluchi was appointed its first Vice Chancellor (1975–1978).
His tenure laid the administrative and academic foundations of the university, guiding its early expansion and institutional stability. His leadership was instrumental in positioning the university as a growing center of academic excellence in Northern Nigeria.
