OMENỤKO – THE FIRST IGBO NOVEL 📚
OMENỤKO – THE FIRST IGBO NOVEL 📚
In 1933, Pita Nwanna, a carpenter from Arondizuogu in present-day Imo State, made history by writing Omenụko, the first novel written in the Igbo language.
Interestingly, Pita Nwanna did not have formal education. He developed his reading and writing skills through Sunday school lessons at the Methodist Church in Uzuakoli.
Despite this, his storytelling talent produced a powerful story rooted in Igbo culture, resilience, ambition, and the journey of life.
Omenụko later became a classic in African indigenous literature and remains one of the most important books in Igbo literary history.
This is a reminder that great knowledge and creativity can come from anywhere.
Do you remember reading Omenụko in school?
