Look at what happens when the gospel is both lived and proclaimed

“Look at what happens when the gospel is both lived and proclaimed—those who receive it are so transformed that they will carry the servants of God on their own shoulders, even through the jungle, as pallbearers of a life that once carried them.”

When Livingstone died, he did not die among countrymen—but among Africans who had watched his life closely.

They found him in the quiet of the hut—kneeling beside his bed.

Word spread quickly. The men who had traveled with him—Susi and Chuma—knew what must be done. If he were buried there, the world would never hear the end of his story.

So they prepared him.

They took his body and, with great care, dried it in the sun, wrapping it tightly in cloth and bark to preserve it for the journey. Then, in a final act of meaning, they buried his heart beneath a tree in African soil—because, as they said, his heart belonged there.

What remained, they would carry.

They built a simple stretcher—a long wooden pole frame. His body was bound firmly to it, wrapped and secured so it would not shift as they walked. It was not light. It was not easy.

Two men at a time would take the weight.

They would lift the pole onto their shoulders—one in front, one behind—and walk.

Hour after hour.

Day after day.

When their strength failed, others stepped in. The burden passed from shoulder to shoulder, but it was never set aside.

Through thick jungle, through swamps and rivers, through lands where danger could rise at any moment—they went on. Nearly a thousand miles to the coast.

There were times they were urged to leave the body behind.

They refused.

This was not cargo.

This was a man they had seen pray… suffer… love them… and speak of Christ not as a stranger, but as one who believed every word.

And so they carried him.

Not quickly—but faithfully.

For nine long months, the procession moved forward—step by step, shoulder to shoulder—until at last they reached the coast at Bagamoyo.

What the world received in England was a body.

But what Africa revealed—

was the weight of a life worth carrying.
