Many people in their late twenties don’t even know who General Oladipo Diya was. He was late President General Sani Abacha’s Chief of General Staff – the second in command in the military government’s Provisional Ruling Council.

In December 1997, Diya was on his knees crying profusely and begging Abacha to save his life from imminent execution after being arrested on alleged coup plot. By April the next year, 1998, he was condemned to death by a special military tribunal for the alleged offense. The world over, people and countries were pleading and begging Abacha to save the lives of Diya and co. It was like Abacha had the key to their lives then – he was to decide whether they would live or die then. By the next two months, in June 1998, Abacha died, without deciding their fate.

Look at it now, Diya had lived another 25 years after Abacha’s death and two years after the death of General Victor Malu, the head of the military tribunal that tried and passed the death sentence on him.

If anyone still believes someone, a living mortal being, holds the key to his life or well-being, then that person needs to learn a good lesson from here. Nobody holds our destiny except our creator – the Omnipotent and the Omniscient.
