WHY THEY WILL NEVER ALLOW REGIONAL GOVERNMENT IN NIGERIA AND THE HISTORY THEY DON’T TELL YOU.

WHY THEY WILL NEVER ALLOW REGIONAL GOVERNMENT IN NIGERIA AND THE HISTORY THEY DON’T TELL YOU.

WHY THEY WILL NEVER ALLOW REGIONAL GOVERNMENT IN NIGERIA AND THE HISTORY THEY DON’T TELL YOU.

Let’s be honest with ourselves my fellow Nigerians.

Nigeria once practiced regional government — and not just casually… it was the system that built the strongest foundations this country has ever seen.

Between 1954 – 1966, Nigeria had 3–4 powerful regions:

Northern Region (Ahmadu Bello)

Western Region (Obafemi Awolowo)

Eastern Region (Nnamdi Azikiwe / Michael Okpara)

Midwestern Region too

Each region controlled its resources, developed at its own pace, and competed.

Facts you can verify?

Western Region built Africa’s first television station (1959).

Free education started in the West.

Eastern Region became one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa.

Northern Region dominated agriculture (groundnut pyramids).

Nigeria was working.

So what happened?

WHY REGIONAL SYSTEM WAS DESTROYED.

1966 Military Coup The first coup ended democracy.

General Aguiyi Ironsi introduced Decree No. 34, turning Nigeria into a unitary system.

Power moved from regions and now to the center.

Fear of Breakup & Civil War.

(1967–1970) General Yakubu Gowon created 12 states in 1967 to weaken regional power and stop secession.

This was a strategic move to prevent regions from becoming too powerful again.

Regional Rivalry & Ethnic Dominance

The old system was dominated by major ethnic groups, while minorities felt marginalized and oppressed, leading to agitation.

Nigeria was becoming like 3 countries inside one country.

WHY THEY WILL NOT ALLOW IT AGAIN.

Now read this carefully.

  1. The Current Constitution Blocks It. Nigeria operates under the 1999 Constitution.

You cannot return to regions without completely scrapping the constitution — something elected politicians cannot do.

Only a revolutionary or military change can attempt it.

Too Many Interests Benefit From Centralization Today:

Oil money goes to the center.

Federal Government controls major revenue.

States depend on Abuja.

If regions return:

Many political elites lose power. They don’t want that to happen.

There’s a chance that regional heroes like Nnamdi Kanu, Sunday Igboho,Asari Dokubo and others would easily hijack the regions and break Nigeria up easily.

Also lots of vested interests are eating from the center. They won’t give up their power.

If we introduce it, Revenue control shifts away from the center.

And power… is never surrendered willingly.

Nigeria Is More Fragmented Today than in 1966 Back then with 3 major regions.

Today we have 36 states + 250+ ethnic groups.

Returning to regions will reopen:

  • Minority vs majority tensions
  • Boundary disputes
  • Resource control conflicts

These Nearly Destroyed Nigeria then.

Once Regional competition turned into:

Political crisis
Ethnic violence
Eventually into Civil War

Over 1 million deaths in the war.

The military redesigned Nigeria to prevent that from happening again.

BUT HERE IS THE TRUTH NOBODY ADMITS

Regional government is actually closer to true federalism:

  • Regions control resources
  • Regions develop at their own pace
  • Healthy competition replaces dependency

And history shows it produced results.

SO WHY THE RESISTANCE?

Because regionalism does two dangerous things:

  • It reduces federal control
  • It forces leaders to perform or fail locally

And that threatens the current political structure.

Nigeria is trapped between two realities:

A centralized system that breeds dependency.

A regional system that risks division but promotes development.

The real question is not:

“Can regional government work?”

The real question is:

“Are Nigerian leaders ready to lose power for Nigeria to work?”

What do you think?

Should Nigeria return to regional government or fix the current system?

Drop your opinion. Let’s have an honest conversation.
