☕️ Coffee declared a strategic African culture: what does this change?
By giving coffee the status of a strategic product on the continent, the African Union has reaffirmed the principles of the Kampala Declaration signed by the African G25 in August 2023 during the Coffee Summit.
The principles include:
🔹 Promoting added value, not the export of unprocessed grains;
🔹 Supporting investment in innovation and the search for new products;
🔹 Fighting inequality: Global revenues from this sector amount to more than $495 billion per year, but only $2.8 billion in Africa (0.6%);
🔹 Free trade through the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Ethiopia and Uganda have been the main actors in the fight for the recognition of coffee as a strategic resource of the continent. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, who himself opened the 21st G-25 African coffee summit in Kampala, was in particular a key promoter of this policy.
